Hi. My name is Paul Cook and I’m a guitarist from Edinburgh. I’m happy earning my living as a driving instructor but my passions lie in guitar music. No plans to be anything other than a UA-cam guitarist, having reached an age where I’ve kinda done the whole “band thing”. Loved it and I’ll cherish the memories but now it’s life in the slow lane, playing for the camera.

Definitely hear a difference. This is my first time to your channel, love your playing! Thanks for sharing
The best sound I heard in rock was Adrian Smiths goldtop with mini humbuckers, just took notice every time, its all over the Live After Death concert
Paul you have an amazing gift, you are also a brilliant teacher. Like many I also follow Tom's channel, have done from the start. He's a brilliant player, but honestly mate I enjoy your playing equally. Great to get the 'inside' take on Nashville, through TB but I look forward to your content just as much. Stay safe.
It is possible to see that you have put in the hours to have chords and melodies flow effortless from your fingers. The whole step bends behind the nut is something I've found a bit challenging to do, at least to be a seamless part of my playing. I think I just answered the challenge myself in my opening sentence 😄 And yes, I will be cheering on you getting the P90 shaped humbuckers for your Les Paul. If the P90s no longer do it for you, it would be interesting to hear how such kind of humbuckers would sound in that guitar. Extra bonus points if you can get them into the same kind of covers that you have for the P90's. Thanks for the music and the lesson. Always a treat 😊
There should be a universal law that demands under severe penalty that if the guitar is fake relic'd or real honest wear it must be stated right off the bat.. This should be stamped on the guitar in indelible ink and on the forehead of the player. Just to be sure.
This video was one of the few that pitted a les paul vs a reasonably obscure santana, ended up buying a 20th aniv. santana to complement my LP...hehe...thank you!
I play country rockabilly bluegrass and Blues I use my own custom set of Thomastik flats that I make myself using different packs 8/38 with a 18 wound third also Luther Perkins used flatwounds Luther Perkins is my number 1 guitar hero and influence I'm 21 and he's been my influence since I was 5 Also I hate roundwound strings
i really dont know whats the best if those nice amps or the faces..... the 2x12 for me sounds better...
You look a wonderful couple. Paul, please tell us your 'wifes' name? Remember marriage is all about give and take. us blokes know you give and they take. No really, if she was the guitarist you'll feel the same.carry on with great videos. Bob
I think you could make any budget level guitar sound like a it cost a king’s ransom 😂
If you're sick of the hum try some Fralin noise cancelling P90s. I've played a guitar with them in and they sounded great - just like P90s except no noise!
Hum is tone.
Have you used a tele with. The 4 way switch mod?
Masterful! I saw Danny Gatton play this long ago.
beautiful, so much passion
Feck me am fiert te comment in case Buk shouts at me again 😀 Nice to see you playing happy notes again, that stuff is so musical. Really enjoying the chord inversions, i just can't take in all the information in one go, it'll take a few dozen watches before it sinks in. Back from Canada now so back normality. 🥲looking forward to your next one , chhers pal
I recently discovered Tobias Hoffmann and I am enchanted and blown away at the same time.
Sounds lovely.... how much is improv and how much is worked out? .... As usual i after watching im inspired and depressed in equal measure !🤣
Thanks stuagu 👍. Good news! I’m not that good 🤣. Everything was created, worked out and rehearsed over 4 days. And then about six takes to get it right.
Awesome playing mate, do you ever play live ?
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day Paul also my favorite youtuber ❤😊
Humbuckers on the goldie just might be the ticket, Paul. If you were live, on stage I'd say no, but what you are doing these days, the P90s are just too unruly. Put them in a box to keep as original equipment and find a sound you like.🤙
I'm gonna guess that Casper and Tobias have never talked to you since it happened.😂 Besides the falling down while walking, I think you might have something there Paul. The absolutely offensive dissonance actually makes a nice rebound with elements of color, but that just might be from falling down... or not.🤪 Cheers.🍻🤙
Lovely vibrato on this Paul. Clean tone to die for, just enough gain to give a touch of fatness without being tubby. As usual, your note choices are fabulous. Loved it :):)
You are a poetic musician! You inspire me greatly. And i havent played my tele in months. Today is the day!! Thank you! Onward!!
I am loving your channel suddenly!! Thank you!
God thats beautiful playing!! Thank you! Im still watching, but that was my overwhelming initial response!
Well I’m delighted to read a comment like that! Cheers Robhead
Hi. Love your's video. Please, what strings using, 10-46 or another?
Hi Michail, glad you liked my video. Yes, that Tele is wearing D’Addario 10-46. Just their basic nickel strings.
the goldtop sounds like a burden, just give it to me!!!
🤣 thanks Evy, I’ll box it up now and ship it off to you 😉
@@paulstaffordcook8799 can't wait😃
Seymour Duncan do a noiseless P90 stack pickup. That should sort you out. Great playing as usual. Thanks.
Interesting! Thanks Mark, I’ll do some research on that 👍
Thank you Paul for another great video, you have brightened up a rainy night in Glasgow. Best wishes and good health to you and your family from Glasgow 👍🎸❤️🎼
“A rainy night in Glasgow”….. good name for a song Frank! Have a nice evening mate 🍻
I remember when your R9 was your soulmate. The heart is a fickle master, and you will always love the one you're with. Cheers Paul, great lesson!
I feel like my R9 just got jealous watching this vid. So I feel the need to go and hold it and play it and reassure it that it’s still the first one I’m grabbing when the house bursts into flames 🤣
@@paulstaffordcook8799 I think it has doubts.😂🤣
I honestly don't think you are any less talented, just lacking a couple of key structural insights to how it all fits together as I think I have said before. Tobias and Casper have a theoretical edge on ya, but that's all. Dim7 transformations and chromatic movement through a key (1, 5 of 2, 2, 5 of 3, 3, 5 of 4 and so forth) opens up the whole world of being able to navigate through any given progression in seemingly miraculous ways to the uninitiated.
Thanks Mooseymoose. The way you explain it here actually perked my interest. Now I’m not gonna run off and study theory, but I do like the way you’re putting it across about structural insights that the likes of Casper and Tobias might have. As always, cheers for being a regular here on my wee guitar channel 🍻
@@paulstaffordcook8799 I think it’s not so much studying theory exactly, though it requires a basic level of understanding. Major scale construction, diatonic chords in key etc. but those more advanced key insights are simple but not obvious to most players. I would estimate about a weeks worth of work on a couple of ideas would yield major results.
Great lesson as always Paul! Very stylish and beautiful playing there 👍
Thank you Neil, cheers 🍻
Beautiful playing as ever
Thank you John, appreciated.
My goodness that Tele sounds fantastic
Thank you Graeme, I just love that guitar. Cheers 🍻
✨
Paul, your Dad needs to find a mint old Gretsch Country Gentleman and an old Gibson J-160E to round out his collection! Beatles fanatic here, too!
What a fantastic collection! Your dad is so passionate about his guitars...lovely man. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks, I’m delighted you enjoyed the vid! Cheers 🍻
Ha!! Good luck! Guitar played a central role in both of my divorces. But remember, Love is all that matters. Great playing!!! Thank you!
Thanks Robhead. So far we’re good, but yes it’s a careful line we walk 🤣
What year is that guitar that thing sounds pretty amazing and I don’t usually like Humbuckers in a tele but that thing sounds amazing. Nice playing very tasty
Thanks Tonya, I’m delighted you like my Tele. I bought new in 2017. It’s a custom shop Fender ‘52 heavy relic” Telecaster. It was obviously a lipstick neck pickup originally, but I’ve since swapped the stock pups for a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound bridge and a Bare Knuckle Stormy Monday (unpotted) neck. It also has a 550k tone pot. I absolutely adore this guitar.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 sounds pretty perfect. I had a bill Nash years ago 52 relict Guitar which my friend still has which sounded amazing too
I bought a Epi Casino as an Everyday Guitar, even with upgrades its shit Chinese crap. It does that tighter feel on ther strings, the neck is wired, all the parts they use are cheap. I have the USA Casino, the fit and finish is night and day. Yep, i know its 6 times the price, but you get to that point with Chinese guitars in the end. I got to that point!
I keep coming back to this one. Summertime gets better every time!! Lovely.
Well thank you Kevin, cheers
Beautiful demo. I like single coil sound it so sweet . Yes humbucker is more output but not as sweet.
Thanks for watching 👍
You definitely get more when you pay more, but to gain, say, 10%, you have to spend 500% more. Nothing at all wrong with that if you have it, but for the average person, the £400 Electromatic Jet is all they're going to need. At some point it becomes a diminishing return. Your Dad's 100% right -- his £2,000 Gretsch does have more personality, but is that personality worth 5 times as much as the £400 guitar? That's the question each individual must answer for themselves when purchasing a guitar.
Wise words, I agree. Cheers for watching
Dude, that tone was filthy by the time you finished. Rock On!🤘
Thanks man, glad you liked it 😊
I'm having so much fun playing with different sound flavours over a same BT, just like you did at the beginning of the video. Throw some phryigian, then goes to dorian, suddenly an altered scale appears and come back with chromatic to pentatonic. Stellar playing as always!!
Thank you Pedro, I’m glad you liked the vid. Happy noodling 🎸👍
You play with heart and soul...caressing each note to make it sing. Incredible!
What a lovely comment! Thank you
Gorgeous playing! What is the name of the song you are playing? Very phrygian mode! I think I prefer the flats.
Thank you 👍. As regards the song…. It’s actually just a nameless piece of noodling that I’d been working on. I’m glad you liked it.
Beautifully done. Nice strat. Thank you
Thanks Matthew 👍
The sound is perfect! Really amazing!
Thanks Arans 👍
